5 Ways Beginning Beekeepers Can Sooth The Savage Neighbor

Some of your friends and neighbors are going to be curious about your new hobby as a honeybee keeper and some won't like the idea very much. There will even be a few who just hate bees near their homes.  What you can count on is that all the neighbors, even the ones who are agreeable, will be a little nervous.

Here are a few things you can do to help them out:

1.    You can invite your neighbors over to see just how gentle honeybees really are - and you can show them that you are perfectly capable of handling them.  Please ask about allergies to bee stings before inviting anyone over.

2.    Tell your neighbors that honeybees are not interested in staying near their hive - in fact, they are more interested in the flowers three miles down the road.  Explain that the only times they are even likely to see your bees is for a few minutes when they are leaving the hive and a few minutes when they are returning to the hive.

3.    After your first harvest, don't forget to give your neighbors a jar of freshly extracted honey!  Once they get a taste of fresh honey, they might be a just fine with your beehives.  Plus, if plan on selling honey in the future, you will have your first few customers ready to buy.

4.    If you need permits or licenses be sure to show them to your curious neighbors.  For many it will enough to convince them that if you are "official" and have all your ducks in row, you must really know what you are doing.

5.    Speaking of licenses and permits; do your homework.  All of your neighbors aren't going to love your new hobby no matter what you say.  If they are upset enough they will check into the legal issues for themselves. If you have not filed the appropriate paperwork they will make sure the authorities know that.
